Crystal Cruises Introduce Stricter Smoking PolicyStarting in May, Crystal Cruises are prohibiting smoking on verandahs of all staterooms and suites aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. Most areas of Crystal ships have been non-smoking for many years, including restaurants and the main entertainment lounges. Non-smoking areas dominate most bars and lounges, although there are some tables that do permit smoking. Cigarette smoking is allowed in private accommodations, although pipe-smoking and cigars are only permitted in the Connoisseur Club and most open decks. "The majority of our guests are non-smoking, and travellers are used to more non-smoking environments today," says Gregg Michel, Crystal Cruises' president. "We respect that smoking is a personal lifestyle decision but there is growing discomfort from non-smokers about verandah smoke negatively impacting the enjoyment of their personal outdoor living space." As with the current policy, guests who do not observe the non-smoking arrangements will first be asked to comply. Failure to do so can result in a guest being asked to leave the ship at his/her own expense. This new non-smoking policy takes effect with the May 7, 2008 London-to-Rome cruise on Crystal Serenity and the May 25, 2008 Athens-to-London cruise on Crystal Symphony.

This is excellent news.I feel strongly about this having recently had a ruined holiday by chain smoking people on the next balcony. From early morning to late at night they constantly smoked as one went out they lit up another. They must have also been on the same dinner sitting as we were never smoke free. We complained and were told by reception that they had paid for their cabin and were entitled. I pointed out that so had we paid for our balcony and were just as entitled to enjoy our outside space. They were totally disinterested in our comments. So they smokers won the day. I feel smoke free balconies are more important than smoke free cabins.Usually you can get rid of the smell in the cabin with a perfumed spray but the balconies are expensive outside space to have to be left unused because of the smokers. Surely with a little thought by the cruise companies everyone could have a happy holiday smokers included

Sense at last prevails! This is good news for those who complain of smoke smells on their own balconies wafting over from others next door or further along.
If this policy had been in place a few years ago, we would not have had the great fire onboard the "Star Princess", where over 310 cabins were burnt out at a cost of over $100 million dollars!! This was initially caused by a passenger flicking their butt off their balcony, only for it to be blown back onto another, which caused the Inferno onboard, it was inexcusable that this should have happened
